Be Dependent… on HIM!!

Happy Independence Day! I pray that you have all enjoyed a very blessed day filled with family and friends as well as with remembrance of why we celebrate.
While I was praying this afternoon, The Lord spoke to my spirit and reminded me that independence is not always a good thing. While we, the citizens of the greatest nation in the world, are amazingly blessed to have the privilege of celebrating our independence; As individuals, it is our great privilege to remain dependent on the One who has always and will always meet our every need.
As we grow into adults (especially young adults), the thing we crave the most is our independence. We want to feel, and especially, to be treated as if we are all grown up. We want to be respected and we want the fact to be recognized, that we can handle things on our own. The thing is… we can’t.
John 15:5 says this, “I am the Vine; you are the branches. Whoever lives in Me and I in him bears much (abundant) fruit. However, apart from Me [cut off from vital union with Me] you can do nothing.” (Amplified Bible)
As long as we are in Christ… as long as we trust in and rely on Him, we can do ANYTHING! But apart from Him we can do nothing.
Philippians 4:13 says, “I have strength for all things in Christ Who empowers me [I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him Who [a]infuses inner strength into me; I am [b]self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency].” (Amplified Bible)
Again we see that we can do ANYTHING in Christ. With His help, there is nothing we can’t face, nothing we can’t handle and nothing we can’t do. But without Him, as John 15:5 says, we can do absolutely nothing.
Colossians 3:16 says, “And whatever you do [no matter what it is] in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus and in [dependence upon] His Person, giving praise to God the Father through Him.” (Amplified Bible) Here, we see that we are to do everything in His name as we depend on Him!
Galatians 3:2-3 tells us that the most important thing of all… the salvation of our souls… can only be attained as we trust in and depend on Him. We can NEVER receive salvation without complete trust in and reliance upon Christ. Unfortunately, just like the Galatians did, we sometimes strive to live a holy and victorious Christian life completely independent of God and the help and guidance of His Holy Spirit. As Paul explains to the church at Galatia, this is completely impossible! Read how Paul explained it in his letter to the Galatians;
“2 Let me ask you this one question: Did you receive the [Holy] Spirit as the result of obeying the Law and doing its works, or was it by hearing [the message of the Gospel] and believing [it]? [Was it from observing a law of rituals or from a message of faith?]
3 Are you so foolish and so senseless and so silly? Having begun [your new life spiritually] with the [Holy] Spirit, are you now reaching perfection [by dependence] on the flesh?” (Amplified Bible)
We can NEVER enjoy a victorious life independent of the very one who gives us this life in the first place. I will say it again, as we depend on Him, we can do ANYTHING. But apart from Him, we can do NOTHING!
Though it is a fantastic thing to celebrate the independence of our great nation, independence that affords us the freedom to practice and to share our faith in Christ, we should never seek to be personally independent or self reliant. It is our great honor and privilege to be completely dependent on our Savior, Christ Jesus and upon our Heavenly Father, who longs to take care of us as we surrender ourselves to Him and His perfect will for our lives.

About Shirley Ann Washam

I am an extremely blessed, divorced mother of four AMAZING children. Above that, I am a child of God! I pray that He would use this blog to speak through me to those who are hurting and discouraged. My goal is to share whatever is given by our LORD to uplift and encourage those who, like me, are blessed beyond measure, but still sometimes find themselves struggling to find answers and need a little encouragement. If you are in need of encouragement, I pray that you find it here, in the words that He speaks through me.
