He came to set the captives free… ALL of them!

In a recent conversation about someone who struggles with addiction, the words. “Once an addict, ALWAYS an addict”, were spoken…. By a believer in Christ.

I have to say that, that declaration grieved my spirit deeply.

First, this is a complete and total LIE! Of course, it is a lie that addicts themselves often believe. And why shouldn’t they? It is what they are hearing from everyone, even from the church. Of course, this is exactly what the enemy would have them believe.

If those words are true, if there really is no hope for redemption, for healing, for deliverance, for change…. for a better and more abundant life, then why even try?

Why not just spend each day chasing the next fix, the next high? Why not just give up, give in to the addiction that rules your life? Why not just overdose and end the pain and shame that is felt every single day?

If those words are true, then why not just keep on going on the same path until they die in their sin and finally get the punishment that everyone says they deserve?

Why not?!

I’ll tell you why not! Because that is a filthy rotten lie right from the mouth of Satan himself!

Jesus did NOT come to this earth and die on that cross to pay for your sin just so that you could buried in it until your last breath! He came to offer life! He came to offer hope! He came to offer deliverance! He came to SET THE CAPTIVES FREE!!

Isn’t that what addicts are, captives to sin and addiction? Doesn’t His sacrifice pay the debt for their sin as well as for mine? Did the death of Jesus only take care of the common, everyday sins committed by those who have never really gotten completely lost in the filth of this life? Was His blood not strong enough to cover the most wretched sin that could ever be imagined? Did it only cover those self righteous few who were ‘almost good enough’ to have made it on their own?

I think NOT!

Jesus came to bring forgiveness to the sinner, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US, and to cover us in HIS righteousness! There is NO sin that is too big, too ugly to be covered by the blood of Christ! There is no sinner that is beyond redemption! NO ONE is so far gone that he can not be reached and pulled out of the mire of sin, by the hand of the God that I serve!

It’s time that we let them know it! It’s time that we share the grace that we have been given! It is time that we show the love of God to EVERY person, no matter what their sin is!

My God, my SAVIOR came to seek and to SAVE those who are lost! It’s time that we, ‘church people’ hop down off of our pedestal of self righteousness and GO OUT… PREACH THE GOSPEL! SPREAD HOPE! SPREAD LOVE! Share it with those who need it the most! That is why He left you here on this earth! He could have just taken you home to glory the moment that you accepted Him as your savior. But He didn’t. He left us here so that we could tell the world of the grace and forgiveness that we have received. We have a job to do! There are souls to be saved! There are captives to be set free! If you have given your life to Christ, if you have received His forgiveness, His salvation…. You are meant to SHARE IT! You know the truth! YOU hold the keys that can unlock the chains and SET THE CAPTIVES FREE!

What are you going to do with them?

Trusting in HIM,

About Shirley Ann Washam

I am an extremely blessed, divorced mother of four AMAZING children. Above that, I am a child of God! I pray that He would use this blog to speak through me to those who are hurting and discouraged. My goal is to share whatever is given by our LORD to uplift and encourage those who, like me, are blessed beyond measure, but still sometimes find themselves struggling to find answers and need a little encouragement. If you are in need of encouragement, I pray that you find it here, in the words that He speaks through me.
